It has become more and more common for dentists to offer patients laser instead of the normal drill or scalpel in hopes to alleviate pain and anxiety.
Dentists use laser energy mixed with water molecules to remove the decay in a less invasive way. Lasers can remove small to medium-sized cavities and contour bone. As well as sterilize and enlarge root canals, remove canker sores and lesions, usually with no anesthetic, no drilling or cutting and little blood loss or swelling.
The new technology does come with a hefty price tag. Most lasers range from $40,000 to $50,000, which in response would boost the dentist’s fees and require additional costs. Since dental-insurance companies reimburse for surgery not technique so it may result in additional fees for the patient.
The laser is time efficient, enabling dentists to make more profit since they are able to perform more procedures. As the procedure has caught on it is becoming increasingly popular regardless to being the more expensive counterpart.
Patients are usually a fan of the laser. The elimination of the harsh needle and drilling makes getting a filling much more pleasant and enjoyable.
On the down side the laser is slower than the drill and won’t cut through metal, so the baby boomers would not be able to rely on the laser to get rid of their old mercury fillings.
