Do you know what agent is the most effective when it comes to
preventing tooth decay? If you guessed Fluoride, you’re correct!
Fluoride works in two ways: topical fluoride and systemic fluoride.
While topical fluoride strengthens the teeth once they have erupted, systemic
fluoride strengthens not only the erupted teeth but also the teeth developing
under the gums.
How does one obtain topical and systemic fluoride? We gain
topical fluoride from toothpaste, mouth rinses, and gels. We gain systemic
fluoride from most food and water supplies. Even though we gain fluoride from
dental products and food and water, sometimes it is not enough to prevent
decay.
