Summer is now well underway and many people are enjoying the
sunshine and the various recreational activities there are to participate in!
Many of the typical summer activities are swimming, baseball
and biking which can lead to dental accidents! Here are some tips courtesy of
CDA (California Dental Association) on what to do if you have a dental
emergency this summer!
If your tooth gets knocked out, try and find the tooth immediately and call your dentist as soon as possible to schedule an emergency
appointment. If you are able to find the tooth, pick it up and soak it in a
glass of milk or a special solution called Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution. Do
not try and place the tooth back in place yourself, you can cause more damage
that way.
If your tooth is broken after an accident, the type of
treatment you’ll need will depend on how bad the fracture is. In the meantime,
you should rinse your mouth out with warm water and apply cold compresses to
keep the swelling down.
If your injury has affected the soft tissue of your mouth
including tears, puncture wounds or lacerations to your cheek, lip or tongue
make sure you clean the wound right away and get to the emergency room right
away for necessary precautions to take place. You can reduce bleeding by
applying gauze and pressure to the area affected.
