Halloween vs. Tooth Decay!

The scariest thing about Halloween isn't the ghosts and ghouls; it’s the fact that sticky caramels, chewy taffies and hard candies can do a large amount of damage to your teeth.

The American Dental Association is offering and alternative this year co-sponsored by PopCap Games.  Jonathan Shenkin, a pediatric dentist and spokesman for the association stated that only around 44% of children brush their teeth twice a day.  A massive campaign that will include the distribution of 1 million packs of trading cards featuring characters from Plants vs. Zombies, a video game from PopCap, educating children on the importance of oral health.

Tooth decay is one of the easiest diseases to prevent by brushing your teeth twice a day, having a balanced diet and minimal carbohydrates between meals.  When children go trick or treating on Halloween they take home an average of around 90 pieces of candy each, which mean the damage they inflict on their teeth can continue for weeks.  Sticky candies can last in the mouth for long periods of times pulling out fillings.  Some dentists agree that plain chocolate and sugar-free gum are better alternatives for treats.  You should drink water after consuming sugary treats to balance the pH in the mouth.  Brushing your teeth and flossing shortly after will also help remove any of the harmful particles left behind by any of these candies or treats.

Enjoy your Halloween responsibly this year! However, remember the damaging effects can last for weeks!
