Laser Provides Less Painful Substitute to Dentist’s Drill

Are you petrified of the dentist drill?  Do you try and avoid frequent dentist visits at all cost!  You don’t have to worry anymore; Laser Dentistry is the painless substitute to the drill!

Kylie Jones, 4, and her mother, Lisa, were nervous about having her first cavity filled.  “In our family, none of us had ever had a filling,” said Lisa.  With laser dentistry Kylie had little to worry about expect watching a movie and open wide for the dentist’s laser hand piece.  The tiny red laser dot uses laser energy mixed with water molecules to eliminate the existing decay.  Although, advanced dentistry is still uncommon, growing trends of dentists are beginning to offer patients this less painful option.
“It works wonderfully on pediatric patients,” says Dr. Rhonda Newton, the dentist who treated Kylie.  “It’s a lot less invasive than traditional periodontal surgery,” said Newton.

The laser dentistry technology was slow to catch on due to high costs, but now dentists are realizing the many different beneficial procedures.  In the past, laser technology was used to perform procedures on soft-tissue.  Advancements in laser technology have allowed dentists to perform procedures on soft tissue, hard tissue, teeth and bone features.

The technology associated with Waterbase laser uses unique wavelength and patented laser energy with water and air to cut through features.

Pros
Less Painful, reducing the need for anesthesia
Reduces the discontent of patients who are frightened with the dental drill
Reduce bleeding and swelling on soft tissue
Ability to preserve more of the tooth during cavity treatment

Cons
Does not eliminate the need for anesthesia
Laser can’t be used on filling already put in place.
Can’t be used to fill cavities in between teeth, around old fillings, large cavities that are being prepared for a crown, nor can they be used on silver fillings or broken crowns, or bridges.
Dental Drills may still need to be used for shaping fillings, polishing fillings and adjusting the bite.
